As a young queer woman, my struggle to understand and embrace my identity has been filtered through the representations available to me. The journey to feel valid in your own sexuality is a constant struggle, particularly in hetero-dominated media that decides what representations are available to us. As many people have their first formative experiences and understandings of sexuality through the lens of pornography, this becomes particularly damaging for queer bodies.
By simply typing the word “lesbian” into any porn site, it is immediately evident of the hetero-fetishization of queer women. This can seem harmless, until it feeds into day-to-day micro aggressions. In this series, I explore the micro aggressions I feel stem from these kinds of representations. This acts as an attempt to reclaim these spaces, to address the internalized misogyny it breeds and calls for a representation that is truly inclusive of a queer narrative.
